A volume offer might promise a percentage off after a customer buys
a certain number of items. The product page may show progress toward
that threshold, while the cart and checkout calculate eligibility
from the actual line items and discount configuration. If those
views do not appear to agree, trace the rule through each step.
count toward the threshold? Write that rule down before comparing
the displayed savings.
Check the threshold definition
Confirm whether the offer counts total units, distinct products, or
only items from a selected product or collection scope. For example,
a three-unit threshold can mean three of the same item, any three
eligible units, or three different eligible products. Those rules
produce different outcomes for a mixed cart.
Then confirm whether the reward applies to every eligible item or
only a subset. A progress bar is a customer-facing aid; it does not
by itself determine the discount calculation.
Compare the price basis
Check which price the discount uses and whether another price or
offer is already active. A product with a sale price may have a
different starting point than its compare-at price. Tax display,
currency conversion, and rounding can also make a preview differ
slightly from the final line-item amount.
Use the same market, variant, quantity, and cart contents when
comparing your product page, cart, and checkout. Changing any one of
these can change eligibility or displayed totals.
Review combination settings
Shopify discounts can have combination rules that affect whether
another product, order, or shipping discount applies alongside the
volume offer. Review the campaign’s combination settings and the
other discounts active in your test cart. Test with one offer first,
then add other promotions one at a time.
A repeatable checkout test
-
Choose one eligible product and one product outside the offer
scope. -
Test one below-threshold quantity, the exact threshold, and one
quantity above it. -
Repeat with a mixed cart if the offer spans a collection or
product pool. -
Record the cart line prices, discount amount, and checkout total
in the same currency. - Test combination behavior separately from threshold behavior.
This makes it easier to distinguish a display mismatch from an
eligibility or discount-rule issue.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the progress message say I qualify when checkout does not?
The message may count items differently from the discount
configuration, or product eligibility may differ between the widget
and the checkout rule. Verify that both use the same threshold,
product scope, and quantity basis.
Why does a percentage discount show a slightly different amount?
Rounding, currency display, sale-price basis, eligible line
allocation, and other discounts can change the displayed result.
