Removing an app is a small change with a few places to check. A
discount can be configured in Shopify, while the storefront
presentation may also depend on a theme app embed, app block, or
app-managed asset. Review each layer so you know what shoppers will
see after the change.

Quick version: list active offers, record where
each storefront element is mounted, preview the current theme, then
repeat the same checks after uninstalling.

Before you uninstall

1. Make an inventory of active discounts

Open Shopify’s Discounts area and note which offers are active,
scheduled, or connected to the app you plan to remove. Record the
discount name, dates, eligibility rules, and any products or
collections involved. If another app or Shopify-native discount is
responsible for an offer, identify that separately.

This step gives you a baseline. It also helps avoid confusing a
discount that remains active in Shopify with a storefront widget
that has stopped rendering.

2. Check theme app embeds and app blocks

In the theme editor, inspect app embeds and the templates where app
blocks appear. Note whether a promotion bar, product-page message,
gift selector, or cart element comes from the app. Theme copies and
unpublished themes may have their own embed settings, so check the
theme you actually publish.

3. Save a reference of the current storefront

Preview a product page, collection page, and cart with a qualifying
and a non-qualifying cart if you can. Capture the offer copy and the
expected price or reward. A screenshot and a short test checklist
make the after-state easier to compare.

After removal

4. Revisit the theme editor

Confirm the app embed is disabled or removed and review the relevant
app blocks. Shopify’s app removal process and each app’s cleanup
behavior can differ; verify what happened in your own theme instead
of assuming all assets were removed.

5. Test the customer journey again

Repeat the same product and cart checks. Look for missing promotion
copy, duplicate messages, unexpected price presentation, or a reward
that no longer appears. Check both desktop and mobile layouts, and
include a cart that should not qualify.

6. Confirm the discount state in Shopify

Review the Discounts area again. Pause or remove any offer that
should no longer run, then verify that the remaining active offers
have the intended dates and eligibility. If something does not match
your notes, inspect the discount source and the app’s uninstall
guidance before making another change.

A simple record to keep

  • Discount name, status, schedule, and qualifying conditions
  • Theme name and templates containing app blocks
  • App embeds that were enabled
  • Before-and-after screenshots from product and cart pages
  • Any cleanup step the app documentation asks you to complete

Frequently asked questions

Does uninstalling an app always remove its theme code?

Cleanup behavior varies by app and by installation method. Check the
app’s documentation and inspect the theme after removal. This
article is a general review checklist, not a guarantee about a
specific app.

Will an automatic discount always disappear when the app is removed?

Discount records and storefront elements can have separate
lifecycles. Review the Shopify Discounts area and the storefront
independently, then follow the app’s removal instructions.

Editorial note: Shopify and app behavior can
change. Confirm current steps in Shopify Help and the documentation
for the app you use.
